A great introduction to “Sonic The Hedgehog” for new players

What about the recent sonic the hedgehog movies doing so well at the box office, it was somewhat inevitable that we would get a collection of games like this. However, Sound origins didn’t phone it and is actually pretty awesome.

Sonic Origins includes four Sonic games, the original sonic the hedgehog, sonic cd, sonic the hedgehog 2 and sonic the hedgehog 3. You can play them in Widescreen Anniversary Mode (shown above), with infinite lives, or Classic Mode (shown below) in 4:3 aspect ratio and with a limited number of lives.

This is actually a pretty nifty setup, as it means new players can go through all four games in Anniversary Mode and then try out their skills on how the games were originally planned with Classic Mode later on.

You also get a Boss Rush mode and a new Mission mode, which lets you play through the games in a row.

Rounding off each game there’s also some great animation from Tyson Hesse and his team, and again his work never disappoints, and it fits in beautifully here.

That said, the original and utterly stunning animated opening for sonic cd is still the stuff of legend. Not least because it looks so good now in HD.

sonic cd is also notable (see below), as it is widely and correctly considered one of the best games in the game. Sonic series. It also tends to get overlooked when releasing retro ports of other games.

After all, we have plenty of options to play the regular sonic the hedgehog games, so the inclusion of sonic cd definitely done Sound origins a bit special.

That’s really the point, there are plenty of ways to play Sonic the Hedgehog games. From Ages of Sega versions to the Mega Drive configuration for Nintendo Switch Online, and let’s not forget the excellent Sonic Mania.

Sonic Mania worth mentioning here too, as it was truly a labor of love for everyone involved. So it’s no surprise that it looks and plays beautifully. Sonic Mania also retained the difficulty of the original Sonic games and this is where I come back to Sound origins.

Yes, there is a proper classic mode for each of these games, but the reality is that this collection is squarely aimed at newcomers to the world. Sonic series. That’s not a bad thing, and I’m all for introducing a whole new generation in a high-speed blue hedgehog with a gold ring addiction, but the birthday mode setup takes away a lot of what made mastering these games so compelling.

I understand Sound origins is intended for addicted children Minecraft and itching for a classic pixel art fix, especially after recent movies. However, I think holding back the challenge more would have been good.

Globally, Sound origins is an excellent collection of games to introduce new players to what made sonic the hedgehog so interesting and unique. However, after Sonic Mania it feels a little off with the reduced difficulty.
